Your lab report will look different from this, but the structure—parameter, result, unit, limit—is universal.

Understanding the Structure of Your Lab Report

Most state-certified lab reports follow a similar format. You’ll typically see:

  • Parameter name — what was tested (e.g., “Total Coliform”, “Nitrate as N”)
  • Your result — the measured value (e.g., “0.8 mg/L” or “Not Detected” or “Absent”)
  • Units — how the measurement is expressed (mg/L = milligrams per liter; CFU/100mL = colony-forming units per 100 milliliters; NTU = nephelometric turbidity units)
  • MCL or SMCL — the regulatory limit
  • Pass/Fail or a flag — some labs flag results that exceed the limit

If a parameter shows “ND” or “Not Detected”, that means the amount present was below the lab’s detection limit. This is a pass for that parameter. If it shows “<0.005 mg/L” (a value preceded by “<”), that also means not detected at that threshold.

Key Terms: MCL vs. SMCL

Every parameter has a reference standard. There are two types:

  • MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level) — A legally enforceable health-based standard set by the EPA for public water systems. For private wells, these are used as reference guidelines, not laws. FHA, VA, and USDA loans use MCLs as their pass/fail standard.
  • SMCL (Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level) — A non-enforceable aesthetic standard (taste, odor, color, staining). Exceeding an SMCL won’t cause illness but may affect the palatability of your water or damage appliances.

How to Get a Second Opinion on Your Results

My result says “ND” — is that good?
Yes. “ND” means “Not Detected”—the lab did not find that substance at or above its reporting limit. This is the best possible result for contaminants like bacteria, arsenic, nitrates, and lead.
My results look fine but the water smells like rotten eggs — why?
Hydrogen sulfide gas is the likely culprit. It’s produced by sulfur bacteria and causes the characteristic “rotten egg” smell. Many basic lab panels don’t test for it automatically—you’d need to specifically request hydrogen sulfide testing. It’s not a direct health hazard at typical concentrations but is unpleasant and can indicate other bacterial activity.
My water is leaving blue-green stains. What does that indicate?
Blue-green staining on fixtures typically indicates copper leaching from your pipes—almost always caused by acidic water (low pH). Test your pH; if it’s below 6.5, an acid neutralizer (calcite filter) is the typical solution. Continued copper leaching can eventually cause pinhole leaks in copper pipes and may elevate copper levels in your water above the EPA action level of 1.3 mg/L.
Do I need a comprehensive test or will a basic test do?
It depends on your purpose. For a home purchase (FHA/VA/USDA), a panel covering coliform, E. coli, nitrates, lead, and pH is typically sufficient, plus any locally required parameters. For ongoing monitoring of a known well, annual bacteria and nitrate testing is a good minimum. If you’re near agricultural land, also test for pesticides and herbicides. If you’re in a region known for arsenic or radon, add those. A full comprehensive test (40+ parameters) is expensive ($300–$500) and usually only needed for a new well, after a significant contamination event, or for a legal dispute.
