How Often Should You Test Your Private Well Water?

Annual testing is the baseline recommendation from the EPA and most state health departments. But location, well age, nearby land use, and recent events all change how often—and what—you should test.

The Annual Baseline: What to Test Every Year

The EPA recommends that all private well owners test their water at least once per year. The minimum annual panel recommended by most state health departments includes:

  • Total coliform bacteria — The primary indicator of contamination from surface water, pests, or septic system issues
  • Nitrate — Particularly important if you have infants in the household; sources include fertilizers and septic systems
  • pH — Acidic water (below 6.5) leaches lead and copper from plumbing; alkaline water causes scale
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS) — A screening indicator; high TDS can indicate elevated mineral content worth investigating

Test More Often If Any of These Apply

Certain conditions raise your contamination risk and warrant more frequent or more comprehensive testing:

Nearby Land Use

  • Agricultural land within 1 mile: Test for nitrates, pesticides, and herbicides at least annually. Consider a comprehensive panel every 2–3 years.
  • Livestock operations nearby: Test for coliform, nitrates, and E. coli twice per year.
  • Oil and gas operations within 1 mile: Test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), benzene, toluene, and methane.
  • Former industrial site or dry cleaner nearby: Test for perchloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and other VOCs.

Well Condition

  • Well older than 20 years: Test annually; inspect casing and seal every 5 years.
  • Drilled before 1975: May have lead components; test for lead annually.
  • Dug wells (shallow wells): More vulnerable to surface contamination; test for bacteria twice per year, especially after wet seasons.

Events That Should Trigger Immediate Testing

  • Any flooding near or around the wellhead
  • A nearby chemical spill or industrial accident
  • A new septic system installed or repaired within 100 feet
  • Sudden change in taste, odor, or color of your water
  • Gastrointestinal illness in the household with no other identified cause
  • A new baby in the household (test for nitrates specifically)
  • New fertilizer or pesticide application on nearby land
  • Any work done on the well (pump replacement, inspection, deepening)

Regional Contaminants Worth Testing Proactively

Geology and land use create regional contamination patterns. Even without an event trigger, certain areas have elevated baseline risk:

  • New England (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, NY upstate): Arsenic, radon, and uranium naturally occur in granite bedrock. Test for arsenic every 1–2 years.
  • Upper Midwest (IA, MN, WI, IL, IN): Elevated nitrates from agricultural runoff. Annual nitrate testing is essential.
  • Mid-Atlantic (PA, MD, NJ, DE): Radon in some areas; industrial contamination in others. Consider radon testing every 2–3 years.
  • Appalachian coal country (WV, KY, eastern OH, southwestern PA): Acid mine drainage can affect shallow wells. Test for pH, iron, manganese, and sulfate.
  • Southwest (AZ, NM, parts of TX): Naturally elevated arsenic and uranium. Test annually for both.
  • Rural Southeast (GA, FL, AL, MS): Karst limestone geology means faster surface-water infiltration; test bacteria twice per year if on a shallow well.

Can I use a DIY test kit instead of sending to a lab?
