Nitrates in Well Water: What to Do If Your Test Is High

Nitrate is one of the most common chemical contaminants in private wells across the U.S., particularly in agricultural areas. The EPA limit of 10 mg/L exists specifically to protect infants. Here’s everything you need to know.

🚨 Critical: Infants Under 6 Months

If your nitrate result exceeds 10 mg/L, do not use this water to make infant formula or feed to an infant under 6 months old. High nitrates can cause methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome"), a potentially fatal condition in very young infants. Use bottled water or a certified nitrate-removing filter for all infant feeding until the water is treated or tested below 10 mg/L.

What Nitrates Are and Where They Come From

Nitrate (NO₃⁻) is a naturally occurring compound found in soil and water as part of the nitrogen cycle. At elevated concentrations in groundwater, it almost always indicates human activity:

  • Agricultural fertilizers — Both synthetic and organic (manure) nitrogen fertilizers leach nitrate into groundwater over time. This is the primary source of elevated nitrates in rural well water nationwide.
  • Livestock operations — Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) generate enormous volumes of nitrogen-rich waste that can overwhelm soil uptake and reach groundwater.
  • Failing septic systems — Septic effluent is nitrogen-rich. A failing or inadequate drain field releases nitrate-laden water into the soil where it can reach shallow wells.
  • Old or shallow wells — Shallow dug wells and old wells with inadequate casing are most vulnerable to agricultural and septic-source nitrate contamination.

Health Effects of High Nitrates

Infants under 6 months: Nitrate interferes with the ability of hemoglobin to carry oxygen. Infant hemoglobin is particularly susceptible. High nitrate water consumed by infants (either directly or through formula mixed with contaminated water) can cause methemoglobinemia—a life-threatening condition where the blood loses its ability to carry oxygen. Symptoms include bluish skin color (especially around mouth and fingernails), lethargy, and difficulty breathing.

Adults and older children: Adults have digestive bacteria and red blood cell enzyme activity that largely converts methemoglobin back to normal hemoglobin. At typical well water concentrations (up to ~50 mg/L), nitrate does not cause acute illness in healthy adults. Long-term studies have suggested possible associations between elevated nitrate exposure and certain cancers, but the evidence is not conclusive at concentrations typical of well water.

Pregnant women: Some research suggests concern for developing fetuses. As a precaution, pregnant women should avoid drinking water with nitrates above 10 mg/L, particularly in the first trimester.

What to Do If Your Nitrate Test Is High

  1. Stop using the water for infant formula immediately

    Use bottled water rated for infant use. Do not boil the water — boiling concentrates nitrates rather than removing them.

  2. Re-test to confirm

    A single high nitrate result should be confirmed with a second test from a certified lab, collected according to proper protocol. If the second test also exceeds 10 mg/L, the contamination is real and consistent.

  3. Identify potential sources nearby

    Is there a fertilized field, feedlot, or aging septic system within 300 feet of your well? Understanding the source helps determine whether remediation is practical or whether the aquifer is broadly affected.

For most households, a point-of-use reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink is the most practical and cost-effective solution. It treats the water used for drinking and cooking (where the health risk is concentrated) without requiring a whole-house system. An NSF/ANSI 58-certified RO system will reliably reduce nitrates to below 10 mg/L in treated water.

My nitrate is 12 mg/L — just slightly over the limit. Do I still need to treat it?
If there are no infants or pregnant women in your household, a level of 12 mg/L poses minimal acute risk to adults. However, the 10 mg/L limit exists as a health-protective standard, and exceeding it means your well water does not meet EPA drinking water standards. For a real estate transaction, it will fail FHA/VA/USDA requirements. For personal use, treatment is recommended — particularly because nitrate levels in agricultural areas often increase in spring and after heavy rains, and a 12 mg/L baseline may spike higher.
Will a Brita or standard pitcher filter remove nitrates?
No. Standard activated carbon filters (Brita, PUR, Pur, and similar pitcher/faucet filters) do not remove nitrates. They are effective for chlorine, taste, odor, and some VOCs, but nitrates pass through carbon filters unaffected. You need a reverse osmosis system or an anion exchange system specifically designed for nitrate removal.
