Spring Well Startup After Winter

A well that was winterized or left dormant over cold months needs a careful startup protocol before resuming normal use. Follow these steps to flush, inspect, and verify water quality before your first glass of spring water.

Why Spring Startup Matters

During winter dormancy, several things can change in and around your well system:

  • Stagnant water in pipes can develop bacterial growth
  • Freeze-thaw cycles can loosen wellhead components and create entry points for surface water
  • Snowmelt and spring runoff can infiltrate a compromised wellhead or casing
  • Rodents seeking warmth may have nested near or accessed the wellhead area
  • Pipe connections that were subjected to freezing may have hairline cracks that leak

Spring Startup Step-by-Step

  1. Inspect the wellhead before starting anything

    Walk to the well before turning power back on. Check the cap for displacement, cracks, or insect/rodent intrusion. If the cap is off or damaged, do not start the pump. Sanitize before proceeding. Take photos of anything unusual.

  2. Check all exposed and vulnerable pipe sections

    Before restoring power, inspect any above-ground or shallow-burial pipes for frost heave damage. Check pipe unions and connections in the pump house, pressure tank room, or any above-ground plumbing. Tighten any loose fittings. Turn on the pump with a bucket under any suspect connections rather than pressurizing the full system immediately.

  3. Restore power slowly and listen

    Restore the pump circuit breaker and listen. Normal: a brief run, then pressure building to cutoff. Abnormal: pump runs continuously without pressure building (possible broken pipe, dry well, or failed pump); pump trips breaker immediately (electrical fault). If abnormal — shut power off and call a contractor before proceeding.

  4. Flush the system thoroughly

    Run every cold-water tap in the house for 15–20 minutes until water is clear, pressure is stable, and any odor from stagnant water has dissipated. Flush each fixture in sequence rather than all at once so the pump maintains adequate pressure. Include hose bibs, laundry connections, and utility sinks.

  5. Check for any air spurting

    Air in the water lines after winter is normal for the first 5–10 minutes. If air spurting continues after 15 minutes of flushing, it can indicate a crack in the drop pipe (the pipe connecting the pump to the surface) that is allowing air to enter. This needs a contractor to assess.

  6. Test water quality before drinking

    After flushing, collect a water quality sample for at least bacteria and nitrates. This is especially important if your wellhead showed any signs of winter damage or if you experienced significant snowmelt or flooding in the area. Do not resume drinking the water until a bacteria test comes back clean.

  7. Service treatment equipment

    Restart your UV system (verify lamp power), water softener (run a manual regeneration cycle), and check any filter cartridges that have been sitting idle. Replace filter cartridges that have been in service more than 6 months regardless of appearance.

If the Well Was Properly Winterized (and Reactivated)

If you properly winterized last fall (drained and blew out the system, added antifreeze to appropriate components), the startup is more straightforward:

  • Re-prime any components that were drained
  • Remove any winterization antifreeze from the system completely before use
  • Flush thoroughly (at least 20 minutes at all taps)
  • Test bacteria before resuming drinking water use
The water looks fine and has no smell after flushing — do I still need to test?
Yes. Bacteria, nitrates, and most chemical contaminants have no taste, color, or odor at concentrations that can cause health effects. Visual clarity after flushing tells you the stagnant water is cleared — it doesn't tell you whether contamination entered over winter. A bacteria test ($75–$150) gives you certainty.
We had significant snow this winter and I can see water has pooled near the wellhead. What should I do?
Pooling near the wellhead is a serious contamination risk. Perform a thorough visual inspection of the wellhead cap and casing. If there are any signs of surface water entry (dirt inside the casing, evidence of animal intrusion, loosened cap), sanitize the well with shock chlorination before use. Test bacteria after sanitizing and before resuming drinking water use. Also address the drainage issue: regrade the soil around the wellhead to slope away in all directions.
